Moya Community

This site is a tribute to the people of Moyar community, more popularly referred to as Bovis. Here you will get information related to this ever-growing and progressive community.

Originally from the border of coastal Karnataka and Kerala, Moyars are at present spread worldwide with majority in Mumbai, Bangalore and Gulf countries. The outcome of being in the border line of Karnataka and Kerala can be seen in the language spoken by the natives and their over all culture; which is a blend of the cultures of these two states and areas surrounding.

The trend of exploring the soil of another place for education or work is not new for its people; as a result, our people are spread all over the world pursuing careers or further studies.  Education was always considered important by the moyars.  It is therefore no wonder that the community has to its credit three schools, each located at Udyawar, Aila and Uchila.

This craving for knowledge is also the reason why the community has successfully managed to spread its wings into various dignified professions such as Medicine, Finance, Media, Engineering, Government Jobs and much more. And with the same vigor, there are people from the community, who have made or are making their mark in the field of sports.

Below are some less known facts of the Moyar Community;

  1. Community is divided into 13 Kutumbas
  2. There are 11 main Stanams, each has different forms of Ma Bhagawathi for worship
  3. Every year between March to May, there are religious functions held at Aila, Adka, Udyawar.  These functions are a part of the rituals of these Stanams.
  4. Matriarchal family system is followed

Another very interesting aspect of our community is that it does not allow dowry system.  Ages ago, our ancestors had completely scrapped this social evil. Moyars practice this system even today and are proud to do so.

The attachment with our native land can be seen in the urge to be close to it as much as possible.  While many prefer to spend their vacations at the native village; in the recent years, there are others who have permanently packed their bags off to the native place.  With the infrastructural developments, it has become all the more tempting to be back to their roots.

The beauty of our native land is attractive enough not just for the tourists but also for the people who have lived here.  This could be a reason why, one can now notice a rise in sea-facing resorts, cottages built at Uchila for those who do not have a house there.  And many others are renovating their houses to spend their retired life in their good old native village.

About a decade back, people were getting distanced from each other with not much options left to know others in the community.   Thanks to some networking sites people are getting to know each other like never before.  Similarly with moyars.com, we hope to see more interaction between moyars and also get to know our culture, customs and background better.
